Media Distillery, the video user experience optimisation platform, has rolled out an AI-based solution to boost content discovery.
Preview Distillery utilises AI tools, such as scene detection and content segmentation as well as machine learning, to automatically create short clips from live broadcast and on-demand video content.
It generates previews in near-real time and is fully automated, without the need for human intervention such as editing. Media Distillery suggests this development is both cost-effective and scalable.
The dynamically generated snippets, such as a scene from a documentary or a series of clips from a sports broadcast, offer users a “flavour” of the show’s content.
For live broadcasts, Preview Distillery leverages the company’s EPG Correction Distillery and Ad Break Distillery solutions to ensure content is selected from the right programme and does not contain ads.
It aims to reduce users’ time in deciding what to watch, thus lowering potential frustration.
According to the 2023 State of Play report from Nielsen’s Gracenote, viewers could get overwhelmed by the amount of content available and spend a long time deciding what to watch.
The report found that consumers spend on average 10.5 minutes choosing what to watch, with up to 20% deciding not to watch anything at all, thus posing a churn risk for broadcasters and streaming platforms.
Preview Distillery is a progression from the Image Distillery solution, which generates episodic still pictures from each programme as alternatives to a stock image.
“Over the past few years, content discovery has evolved from being text-centric to visual-centric,” Martin Prins, head of product at Media Distillery, said. “[W]ith Preview Distillery, we go one step further and enable our customers to take full advantage of the possibilities of automatically generated clips.”
