Good News For Capital As Tarrant Plans To Stay

Capital Radio’s lynchpin presenter, Chris Tarrant, has told the Financial Times that he does not intend to leave the station before his contract expires in 2004, adding that he is not looking to leave even after that. “I will stay. I like it here,” Tarrant is quoted as saying in today’s edition of the paper.

This is good news for Capital, which is understood to derive 15% of its revenues from Tarrant’s 16 year old breakfast show and probably an even higher proportion of its profits. The show attracts around 1.5 million listeners and is the clear leader in the commercial sector.

In September last year, Capital announced that it had renegotiated and extended Tarrant’s contract, under which a new breakfast programme has been launched. The news came as a relief to advertisers, investors and Capital alike.
