TSA Population Updates

RAJAR updates the population figures for all stations once every year. The updates are based on projections from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as to how the UK population has changed since the last census.

Hitherto the updates have been based on projections from the 1991 census, which have shown continued population growth in the UK. However, the ONS has now released UK population data for 2003, projected from the 2001 census. The 2001 census revealed that the UK population was lower than previously estimated by the ONS. The number of adults aged 15+ in the UK (excluding Channel Islands) has declined from 49,029,000 to 48,260,000 (a fall of 1.6%), and there has been an overall downwards trend in station populations.

Stations and other data users are asked to bear this in mind when interpreting the Quarter 2 results. What may look like a fall in the absolute number of people listening to a station might simply be a product of the ONS adjustment of the number of people living within a station’s Total Survey Area.
