News Group Appoints New Commercial Director

News Group Newspapers is continuing to shake-up its senior sales team with the appointment of Ian Clark to the role of commercial director.

The new role will see Clark, previously director of advertising, head-up a team responsible for growing all revenue streams across News Group’s commercial operations including advertising, news group digital and the enterprise division.

Clark has been with News International for the last four years, during which time the group’s advertising income has gone from strength to strength following the success of its key titles. Prior to that he worked for several years in the agency business.

Clark’s appointment comes just days after News International poached Express Newspaper Group’s Roland Agambar to fill the shoes of Belinda Furneaux-Harris as the company’s marketing director in charge of flagship titles the Sun and News of the World.

The appointment marked the third marketing director in as many years for the newspaper giant following the surprise departure of Furneaux-Harris earlier this year after less than 12 months in the job. Furneaux-Harris replaced Andy Agar, who resigned in in March 2003 to set up his own promotions agency (see News Group Appoints New Marketing Director).

The latest ABC results for the six months to September reveal relatively lacklustre performances for News Group’s key titles. The Sun and News of the World, saw circulation fall by 4.8% and 2.2% respectively in year on year analysis, while flagship broadsheets, the Times and Sunday Times, faltered by 3.2% and 1% during the same period.
