Egmont Rolls-Out New Pre-School Magazine

Competition in the burgeoning children’s magazine market will hot up this month following the launch of a new monthly pre-school title from Egmont Magazines called My Disney Favourites.

Designed for parents and children aged between two and five to read together, each edition of the new title will be dedicated to a different Disney character each month, in-line with the latest family film and DVD releases.

My Disney Favourites will hit the news-stands with a cover-price of £2.50 and an initial print run of 50,000. October’s launch issue will be based on Disney’s Aladdin, tying in with the release of the film on DVD earlier this month. The November issue will feature Jungle Book, followed by 101 Dalmatians in December.

The magazine has been designed to stimulate early learning in a ‘fun and entertaining’ way. Each issue will consist of three key elements, including a 24-page magazine, a pull-out poster and interactive game with press-out characters.

Egmont, which is one of the biggest players in children’s publishing, also claims the title will introduce children to some of the basic skills they need before they start school. Each issue comes with parental notes and a special focus on the area of communication, creativity and knowledge.

Commenting on the launch, Debbie Cook, publisher of Egmont Magazines, said: “The launch of My Disney Favourites represents a true innovation in childrenšs magazine publishing. It has been developed following research and focus groups with parents and children to assess exactly what they wanted from a publication.”

Earlier this year Egmont launched two new titles for young readers in the form of Hot Wheels for boys aged six to ten and My Scene for girls of the same age. The launch of both magazines was preceded by extensive research in the youth market (see Competition Hots Up With New Teen Magazine Launches).

The children’s magazine sector has seen a number of new launches over the last few months as publishers move to cash in on significant rises in both retail and copy sales. Future Publishing became the latest to enter the market in September with the launch of a new title called Jetix, which based around hit television shows such as Power Rangers, Spider Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (see Future Enters Kids Market With Jetix Magazine).
