Deltatre powers next chapter for D2C basketball in Italy
D2C service LNP Pass streams over 1,200 games a year

Deltatre, a leading provider of streaming, data and graphics solutions for sports organisations and media companies, has won two major deals to develop and manage direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming services covering the top three divisions of professional basketball in Italy.

The first agreement is an expansive five-year partnership with Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). Deltatre will develop and run all aspects of LBA’s production and operations, as well as its consumer-facing D2C streaming service LBATV, which serves domestic and international audiences.

LBATV is available on smart TVs as well as mobile, tablet and browser. It features live and on-demand content, with various subscription packages.

Deltatre CEO Andrea Marini said the league is redefining the future of Italian basketball.

The second agreement with Lega Nazionale Pallacanestro will launch a revamped platform for its LNP Pass D2C service, which covers the next second and third leagues, Serie A2 and Serie B.

Also available on smart TVs, mobile and web, LNP Pass streams over 1,200 games a year. The service is now powered by Deltatre’s D3 Volt, a modular platform that supports media workflows, content management system, player, payment and analytics capabilities, among other features.

Strategic shift

“This partnership is about more than technology — we are directly managing production, distribution, sponsorship, D2C streaming, growth marketing and all other elements needed to bring the sport directly to fans,” Marini added. “We are proud to enable this significant strategic shift and I thank the LBA and its clubs for their trust.”

Umberto Gandini, president of LBA, views this as a highly strategic partnership. “We have decided to adopt a new direct distribution strategy to bring Serie A to fans,” he continued. “This is not a short-term operation but a long-term investment made with a highly regarded technology company to help our clubs become increasingly attractive and sustainable.”

For LNP, Deltatre will provide strategic consultancy as well as tech provision, overseeing growth marketing initiatives to help the league expand its fanbase. This is part of a long-term vision at LNP to diversify revenue streams.

Francesco Maiorana, president of LNP, said his league anticipated the importance of D2C streaming to sports organisations when it launched LNP Pass in 2015. “We needed a partner that could take us to the next level in terms of quality, making LNP Pass even more accessible, with richer content,” he added.
