SUBtv Aims To Cash In on Flyposting Crack-Down

SUBtv, the student union advertising network, is offering brands that use flyposting the chance to target their youth audience via an animated section on its portfolio of television screens across the country.

The initiative follows increased pressure on flyposting companies by a number of local councils, particularly Camden, which recently brought an Anti-Social Behaviour Order against music giant Sony (see ISBA Urges Members To Swat Flyposting Tactics).

SUBtv is hoping to cash in on the crack-down by offering brands the opportunity to use a special ‘sidebar’ format which runs parallel to the programming on its range of plasma screens in 76 universities across the UK.

Short ads can be placed at verying weights on the sidebars on a site-by-site basis and can carry any visual material from logos to commercials. The company claims the format is ideal for brands that use flyposting, such a record labels, venues and other music-related advertisers.

Commenting on the initiative, Peter Miles, chief executive of SUBtv, said: “Our programming is built around the interests of 18 to 24 year-olds, with music, sport and animation predominant, as well as plenty of local university content. It’s a versatile medium that gets really close to its audiences and has exactly the edgy, street feel that would be ideal for records, events and all types of music promotion.”

SUBtv, which launched earlier this year with the backing of venture capital firm Beringea, recently expanded its range of plasma television screens to encompass a further 20 universities across the UK, in a move that brings a total of almost 1.5 million viewers to the service.

The fledgling media network now claims to provide advertisers with unprecedented access to an otherwise elusive audience of 18 to 24 year-old ABC1s. The company now reaches around 28% of this age group, as well as 70% of the national university population.
