HomeChoice Targets Parents With Child Friendly Remote

Pay-TV and broadband provider HomeChoice has launched a child-friendly remote control allowing access to only those channels deemed suitable by parents and preventing unsuitable content being viewed by curious youngsters.

The brightly coloured control, dubbed the MiniMote, is designed to guard against underage viewers accessing adult content via HomeChoice’s television channels or video on demand services. Designed to be simple to use, it restricts access depending on the customer’s level of service, to children’s channels such as CBBC, CBeebies, Boomerang and Nickelodeon.

However, the remote control also allows subscribers access to Scamp and Disney Treasures, HomeChoice’s on demand children’s services providing viewers with their choice of content at any time of the day or night.

In an unusual move the device will be given away free of charge to customers who subscribe to the television provider’s package of children’s channels, clearly attempting to woo parents away from other multi-channel providers by marketing the TV/broadband hybrid service as a more family orientated offering.

HomeChoice recently unveiled a massive advertising campaign designed to dominate the media in and around London, where the service currently operates. Costing £2 million, the advertising blitz will encompass outdoor, press and radio advertising and encourage potential customers to ‘Demand More’ from their television or broadband provider (see HomeChoice Unveils Campaign To Dominate London’s Media).

The company has also announced an expansion of its services, extending beyond the M25 for the first time to encompass an additional six telephone exchanges and 100,000 extra homes. The expansion will begin the company’s roll out to the South East and should be completed by January 2005 at the latest (see HomeChoice Boosts Coverage To Customers Outside London).
