The Times Builds Job Pages With Career Supplement

The Times has announced the launch of a new appointments supplement, published in compact form to target junior to middle managers in the commercial sector following the success of its Public Agenda insert.

The new supplement, entitled Career, will be published on a weekly basis from 16 September, offering readers in-depth editorial content about jobs and the overall job market, as well as a range of different recruitment advertisements.

Designed to be more rounded than traditional jobs sections, the new supplement will feature news, editorial and comment. Among the topics to be covered are features on career issues and challenges for junior to middle managers, advice on salaries, regular columns highlighting job perks, practical guidance from head hunters and informative case studies.

The new title is designed to build on the success of the recently launched Public Agenda supplement, which offers the best of the week’s news from the public sector with comment, analysis and job listings for the industry. Career will be edited by Parminder Bahra, who also edits Public Agenda.

Commenting on the new supplement, Robert Thomson, editor of The Times, said: “We have had a wonderful response to Public Agenda, and Career is set to follow in that informative and witty tradition. Career will be an essential part of any seeker’s search for the best jobs and be a weekly road map for those ambitious souls who want to progress from their present position.”

Mike Gordon, commercial director at Times Newspapers Ltd, added: “There is real growth in the junior to middle management sector so we have created this new appointments section to meet the needs of both readers and advertisers. The past year has been a successful one for The Times with our circulation increases and we are committed to introducing new developments to the paper to ensure it goes from strength to strength.”

The launch of Career will be supported by a wide-ranging marketing campaign, comprising direct mail, trade press advertising, online banner advertising and sampling. Times Online will also host a microsite for the new section.

The Times‘ Sunday sister title has been working to increase the size and variety of its supplements, and will this month create its biggest ever Style magazine. The 156-page seasonal special will be packed with exclusive features on Madonna’s wardrobe and England’s most fashionable health gurus.

The Sunday Times also created a super-sized Appointments section last weekend, billed as the paper’s biggest recruitment supplement for over three years, which attracted several high-profile advertisers (see Times Boosts Fashion Coverage With Bumper Supplement).
