ITV Nets Tech Firm For Euro 2004 Website Sponsorship

ITV Sales has secured information technology firm BenQ as the exclusive sponsor of its dedicated Euro 2004 website, which will provide news, statistics and free video highlights of the tournament to fans from 27 May.

The new website will offer viewers a choice of free 30-second highlights from the day’s matches, or the option to subscribe to a paid for premium service produced by UEFA. Visitors to the site will also be able to read exclusive match reports from ITV’s team of football pundits including former England managers Terry Venables, Graham Taylor and Sir Bobby Robson.

The website will be promoted across ITV1 and ITV2 with the site’s URL being screened after appropriate programmes. Commercials will also be aired across ITV’s portfolio of channels, as well as co-branded promotion across ITV’s other online sports sites.

BenQ’s sponsorship was negotiated by Colin Ramsay, head of online at ITV Sales, who said: “We are delighted that BenQ are partnering with ITV over and above other media. With such a high profile and exciting tournament as Euro 2004 they will be exploiting the opportunity online by tapping directly into the nations’ emotions and delivering key messages to their target market.”

Mike Evans, BenQ’s marketing director, added: “BenQ is thrilled to partner with ITV to bring all the fun and excitement of Euro 2004 to football fans across England. The many innovative features on this site ensure that the action and enjoyment of the championship is only a click of the mouse away.”

The move highlights ITV’s commitment to the Euro 2004 tournament, which has already boosted sales of commercial spots and bolstered the broadcaster’s summer schedule. Reports suggest that a single 30-second spot during the Euro 2004 tournament could cost advertisers between £250,000 and £300 000, with the premium for appearing during an all-important England game pushing the rate to around £350,000 (see ITV Sees Revenue Surge As Euro 2004 Approaches).
