Sunday Telegraph To Cash In On Euro 2004 Football Frenzy

The Sunday Telegraph is attempting to cash in on this summer’s feast of football by publishing a special 48-page Euro 2004 magazine with the newspaper next weekend.

The title, sponsored by British Airways, includes contributions from regular football columnists Gary Lineker and Gerard Houllier, who will both be writing for the paper during the forthcoming tournament.

The publication of the one-off magazine on 13 June will be supported by a 30-second television advertising campaign that will air nationally on Sky, Channel 4 and Five in the week prior to launch.

The title will also see Gary Lineker give his player-by-player assessment of the England squad and in a second piece writes about his own experiences of international competitions. Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier will write about the importance of Steven Gerrard to the England team and ex-England defender Graeme Le Saux tackles the problems facing Sven-Goran Eriksson on the left side of defence.

The Daily Telegraph also recently launched its Fantasy Euro 2004 competition with a series of specially themed posters. The competition will allow entrants to compete for the top prize of £50,000 by selecting a team of 11 players within their £50 million budget.

The latest monthly ABC results for April reveal a relatively lacklustre performance for both the Daily and the Sunday Telegraph, which saw their circulation decline by 2.5% and 1.6% respectively in year on year analysis.

The Daily and Sunday Telegraph are currently in the process of changing ownership and it is understood that Lord Rothermere’s Daily Mail & General Trust is close to seizing control of both titles with a seemingly unbeatable cash bid approaching £700 million (see Lord Rothermere Tables Knock-Out £700 Million Telegraph Bid).
