Eighth Train Operator Signs For Onboard TV System

The UK’s first onboard TV system for the railway network, TNX TV, has announced a deal with its eighth train operator to carry the system, potentially providing an extra 10 million viewers to the network each year.

The as yet unnamed train operator is understood to be running services on national routes to and from London. Commenting on the deal Stephen Ollier, managing director of TNX TV, said: “This new train operator is very important, as they have just secured a new franchise to provide services to one of the major cities outside London.”

He added: “National appeal is very important to our advertisers, as we expand our service to provide coverage throughout the UK and attract prominent advertisers at competitive rates.”

TNX TV is currently being installed across a number of train operators’ fleets and plans to launch in Autumn of this year. The system has cost the Derby based company over £5 million to develop and will first be seen on Central Trains in May, aiming to reach 800 million commuters.

The service, which is broadcast to trains using a wireless network, will be shown on six screens and through audio systems installed in each coach. The volume of the broadcasts will automatically adjust to the ambient noise level in each carriage, but each train will also have a ‘quiet zone’ for passengers wishing to avoid the service.

Broadcasts on the system will be funded through advertising and sponsorship, with a target of reaching 900 million passengers per year. Among the content to be broadcast by TNX TV are entertainment and information programmes, including comedy and general interest features, designed to enhance passengers’ journeys.

News and weather content will also be screened after ITN won the contract to provide news programmes to the network last month (see ITN Gives Train Passengers News On The Move). The system also features a closed circuit TV system to improve passenger security while onboard the train.
