Telewest Speeds Up Broadband To Beat Competition

Telewest Broadband has announced plans to shake-up its blueyonder internet services, offering customers significant speed upgrades from next month at no extra cost.

The cable company will offer three tiers of broadband at varying speeds and will be free of usage limitations. The new services will be available to every home with access to Telewest’s broadband enabled network.

Commenting on the initiative, Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer of Telewest Broadband said: “We’re making 2MB our minimum speed and we’ll also be offering a choice of affordable 4Mb and 10Mb services for more demanding internet users.”

He continued: “Our customers will be able to make full use of this extra bandwidth because we won’t be introducing any caps and all new speeds will be available across the network.”

The announcements show Telewest’s continued programme to maintain superiority over competitors, with the bandwidth upgrades planned for September meeting all the requirements of most consumers and the applications and content currently available online.

Tveter added: “Cable is built for speed and, with the advent of the digital home, we are capable of satisfying even the most bandwidth hungry family.”

Last month, Telewest expended the range of its fledgling on-demand service, Teleport, to offer customers access to complete TV series at the touch of a button (see Telewest Boosts On Demand Content Fivefold).

The service bolsters the company’s existing on-demand programme portfolio, extending it from around 60 hours of content to over 300 hours, comprising shows from the National Geographic channel, Discovery, LIVINGtv, Bravo and the BBC.

The Teleport service began roll out early in July, with digital TV customers in Cheltenham and Gloucester the first to experience the new technology (see Telewest Completes First Phase Of On-Demand Roll Out).
