Rivals Frozen Out As Clear Channel Keeps Shelter Contract

BT Transport for London (TfL) has awarded the 10-year £250 million advertising contract for bus shelters in the capital to outdoor advertising specialist Clear Channel’s Adshel division.

Adshel fought off competition from rival street furniture companies including JC Decaux, Maiden/Cemus and Viacom to retain control over the ten year contract.

Commenting on the win, Julie France, group managing director of Clear Channel said: “This is fantastic news and rewards the successful working relationship that Adshel as had with Transport for London over the past 25 years.”

“As part of our submission we have proposed a range of state-of-the art bus shelters from leading designers including Richard Rogers and the introduction of high-tech information solutions at bus stops. Our reputation for providing well-designed shelters backed by a rigorous maintenance regime, and the best sales and marketing team in London media has undoubtedly helped our case.”

She added: “London is the crown jewel of an ad campaign and we are delighted to be able to offer these sites to our advertiser partners. From an advertising perspective, the win consolidates Adshel’s position as the 6-sheet market leader, with 65% of roadside six sheets including the key contracts of the top conurbation’s in the UK.”

Clear Channel is currently involved in a bid for London Underground’s £1,2 billion advertising contract, going head to head with Viacom Outdoor and JC Decaux, with the contract being announced later this year (see Ten Firms To Contest Underground Ad Contract).

Others reportedly bidding for the contract include SMG’s Primesight, Spanish advertising group, Cemusa, KBH Transport Media, Media Initiatives Group, Stroer Out of Home Media, Insight Outdoor and T4 Media.
