Text messaging football fans should be careful that their thumbs don’t drop off, after a staggering 120 million messages were sent on FA Cup final day (May 13) and a whopping 124 million on Champions League final day (May 17).
Figures revealed by the Mobile Data Association (MDA), show that 104 million texts were sent per day during April, beating the previous record set in March of 103 million per day, although the monthly total of 3.13 billion was down in March’s 3.19 billion total (see Text Hits New High As March Marks New Record).
Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators during April increased by 24% on the total sent during the same period in 2005.
But if by a stroke of luck England manage to get out of their group at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, we could see all previous figures annihilated as goal crazed fans bash their buttons into submission, especially as many phone users will be signing up for special alerts giving them the latest video clips, news and results, which are likely to whip them up into an even greater phone-mad frenzy.
