Peak Revamp Spells “Rest” For Celeb Big Brother

Channel 4 Logo Channel 4 has announced it is to “rest” the Celebrity Big Brother format, following a shake-up of the channel’s 9pm weeknight slot.

This year’s series brought huge controversy to the channel following alleged bullying and racism from several housemates including Jade Goody (see Big Brother Controversy Could Force C4 To Rethink Remit).

Julian Bellamy, Channel 4 head of programmes, has said that he wants to create “more anticipation” for the show’s non-celebrity ninth edition next summer by removing the celebrity edition.

He added:”After the race row, it was constantly in the press and part of the national conversation at a time when traditionally it was off our screens – it feels like it has never been away this year. Resting Celebrity Big Brother will benefit the format in the longer term as it will have a bit of breathing space.”

A decision will be taken next year whether the show will return in 2009 or beyond.

The broadcaster has also axed popular shows You Are What You Eat, Brat Camp, It’s Me Or The Dog and Selling Homes Abroad following a shake-up of the schedule in order to make way for new shows.

Grand Designs is the only returning series scheduled into the first six months of 2008, while new The Family is a documentary following a 21st century family.
