News International has cut the price of The Sun across the UK to 30p today.
The move comes less than a month after the company increased the price of the paper in London and the south-east by 5p to 30p, following its 0.8% year on year increase in the latest ABC figures (see The Sun Ups Its Cover Price).
The daily tabloid will now cost 10p less than its main rival the Daily Mirror and 5p less than the Daily Star.
The price-cutting move also creates a larger gap between The Sun and mid-market titles, such as the Daily Mail, which currently costs 50p.
Both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail have increased their cover prices over the past year in an attempt to raise revenues.
The Sun has vowed to continue to pay retailers in England based on a cover price of 35p, despite the 5p price cut announced today.
Roland Agambar, marketing director at The Sun, said: “At a time when many companies, including our competitors, are constantly cutting costs to the detriment of their product, we are constantly looking to improve our product and increase the value we give to our readers.”
The Sun was one of only two daily newspapers, along with the FT, to avoid a circulation fall in Junes ABC figures, with a current circulation of almost 3.1 million (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: June 2008).
