TV Market Round-Up – November 2007

TV Remote Control November saw across the board increases for all the terrestrial channels, with Five attaining the best year on year revenue total. Five saw its revenue increase by 13.3% on November 2006 to £29.8 million with the next best performance coming from breakfast station GMTV (up 13.1% to £6.7 million).

Across the whole ITV1 network revenue posted a modest increase, with figures for November up year on year by 1.9%, to stand at a total of £137.6 million. Channel 4 shrugged off the controversy surrounding the regulatory fines received for its part in the industry phone-in scandals, by posting a respectable revenue total of £65.1 million (a 6.9% year on year increase.)

Satellite finally broke the £100 million barrier, taking in more money than Channel 4, Five and GMTV combined. During November estimated revenue for all multi-channel stations was £102.6 million, up by 26.1% year on year.

ITV Franchises

The best year on year performance within ITV franchise areas came from LWT, which improved its take of network revenue by 1.4 percentage points, to stand at 11.8%.

Central kept the mantle of the largest share provider of ITV1 revenue. For the month of November the Midlands franchise area had a 16.2% share of the network’s revenue, despite a year on year drop of around 0.4 percentage points.

Provider of the smallest share of ITV1 revenue remains West Country, with the station attaining 2% for November.

Costs Per Thousand

ITV1 was more expensive to reach across our featured CPT audiences for this month, with Housewives with Children posting the biggest price percentage increase. For November the cost of reaching a thousand housewives with children was £49.8 (up 14% on 2006’s price). The audience that posted the smallest year on year increase was Men, rising by 3.5%.

For Channel 4 only the cost of ABC1 Adults was cheaper than in 2006, decreasing y 1.3% to cost £21. The biggest increase was recorded amongst the Housewives audience, rising 6% on November 2006.

Five had across the board price increases, with all featured audiences over 10% more expensive than November 2006. ABC1 Adults attained the greatest price increase, up 26.6% year on year for the month.

Commercial Impacts

Commercial impacts decreased across all our featured audiences for ITV1. The biggest fall was seen amongst Housewives with Children, slipping 10.7% on November 2006.

Channel 4 saw all audiences increasing year on year for November. The biggest rise in commercial impacts was within ABC1 Adults, up by 8.3% year on year.

Five saw falls across featured audiences, with Housewives with Children dropping the most, by 10.1% year on year.

All Total Broadcast’s featured audiences rose year on year. Housewives achieved the biggest gain, up 3.1% on November 2006.
