All BBC Records Upturn In Reach And Share Whilst All Commercial Falls

Radio Set All BBC radio saw a year on year and period on period upturn in its weekly reach and share of listening for the final quarter of 2007, according to the latest RAJAR listening figures.

Reach for All BBC rose to over 33.1 million, a 1% year on year increase, whilst share for Q4 2007 now stands at almost 55.5%.

However, All Commercial reported a year on year and quarter on quarter fall for reach and share. All Commercial’s weekly reach now stands at around 30.7 million, whilst share is just under 42.5%.

Share of Listening

All Commercial suffered a drop in share of listening, of over 1.8 percentage points year on year, taking its share below 42.5%.

This was also down more than two percentage points compared to Q3 2007, whilst All Local Commercial also saw a reduction in its share of listening.

All Local Commercial’s share slid almost 5.2 percentage points year on year and almost two percentage points quarter on quarter, taking it to just over 31%.

However, it was better news for All National Commercial, which enjoyed a year on year increase in share of listening of over 7.5 percentage points, taking its share to 11.3%. This was, however, down on the previous quarter.

All BBC’s share was up year on year and period on period, by almost two percentage points, giving it a share of just under 55.5%.

Meanwhile, All BBC Network Radio now has a 45.4% share of listening, following a year on year increase of more than 3.1 percentage points.

However, BBC Local/Regional’s share was brought down to 10% for the period, following a year on year downturn of more than 3.8 percentage points. This was, however, an improvement of almost 6.4 percentage points on Q3 2007.

Weekly Reach

The fourth quarter of last year saw All Commercial’s weekly reach decline by around 2% year on year and 1.6% period on period, to give it a reach of around 30.7 million listeners, whilst All BBC’s reach was up by 1% year on year to more than 33.1 million.

There was a year on year increase for All National Commercial, up around 2.5% year on year to over 13.6 million listeners. However, this signalled a period on period fall of almost 4%.

All Local Commercial reports a weekly reach of around 24.6 million, down from almost 25.1 million in Q3 and almost 25.8 million in Q4 2006.

Meanwhile, All BBC Network Radio recorded an upturn of 1.8% year on year, up slightly period on period, taking its reach to over 29.2 million listeners for the three months to December.

BBC Local/Regional was down year on year but up period on period. Reach for these stations fell 4.3% compared to the same quarter in 2006, and jumped almost 2.3% from Q3 2007, taking reach to around 9.8 million.

Average Hours Per Listener

All BBC stations suffered a year on year decrease in average hours per listener, but this was up from the previous quarter.

Listeners are now sticking with All BBC stations for an average of 17 hours – a year on year decline of around 2.9%.

All Commercial saw a 4.1% decline from Q4 2006, as well as a period on period fall, taking its average hours per listener to 14.

All National Commercial, on the other hand, bolstered its hours per listener, by 1.2% year on year and period on period, to 8.4 hours on average.

All Local Commercial remained static period on period, but fell around 3.7% year on year, taking its average hours per listen to almost 13 hours for the last quarter of 2007.

Hours remained static quarter on quarter on All BBC Network Radio, despite a year on year drop of around 2.5% to 15.8 hours, whilst BBC Local/Regional reports a figure of 10.4 hours – a year on year fall but a period on period rise of 4%.
