More Panellists Confirmed For The Future Of National Newspaper Seminar

MediaTel Group Two more panellists have been confirmed for MediaTel’s Future of National Newspapers Seminar, which takes place on July 1 in Westminster.

Rich Mead, assistant managing director of Metro Newspapers, will be providing a perspective on the continued growth of the free daily newspaper market.

Alex DeGroote, analyst at Panmure Gordon, will provide an overview from a financial angle on the future growth of the newspaper industry.

Mead and DeGroote will be joining Dominic Williams from Carat and Dominic Carter from the Times to discuss the state of the newspaper industry, with topics such as online developments, free v paid and the implications of the credit crunch.

The debate will also cover the media habits of young people in relation to the newspaper market and what can be done to attract a higher youth readership.

A recent study in the US, Finland and the Netherlands – carried out by the World Newspaper Congress – shows that television is the most important source of news and information for people aged between 15 and 29.

Commenting on the research, Robert Barnard, partner and founder of Canada-based DECODE, said: “Young people do not seem to understand the inherent value and difference in newspaper content versus other news media. TV still dominates even in perceptions of credibility and depth of coverage.”

However, the study also found that newspaper companies are well placed to attract young readers if they commit to it.

The MediaTel Group event will be chaired by Ray Snoddy, media commentator par excellence, at One Great George Street in two weeks time.
