C4 boosts website with free archive content

4oD Channel 4 is set to make all of its rights-cleared archived content available on the Channel4.com catch-up TV service 4oD.

The broadcaster plans to add around 4,000 hours of archived content, including classic series such as Trigger Happy TV and Queer as Folk as well as old episodes of popular programmes like Grand Designs, to its website next month.

Channel 4’s plans will enable viewers to watch programmes online at anytime, rather than be restricted to the 30 day period after shows have been broadcast, which is currently the case on 4oD and other catch-up TV services.

However, a number of programmes will not be included in the new archive on 4oD, such as Friends, due to rights or legal issues, according to reports.

Channel 4’s director of future media and technology, Jon Gisby, said: “We were the first broadcaster to launch a comprehensive video-on-demand service in 2006 and since that time 4oD has become one of the UK’s most popular VOD brands.

“The addition of archived content to 4oD on channel4.com means we will be the only UK broadcaster to have all of our content available online.”

Speaking about the recently relaunched Channel4.com and 4oD, Gisby added: “We are extremely proud of the new and improved service and think the combination of fantastic content that’s easy to find and view will prove a compelling service for all users.”

The broadcaster has reported a 111% month-on-month increase in viewing in the first month since the relaunch, with programmes such as Hollyoaks, The Inbetweeners and Come Dine With Me performing particularly well.
