RTL And Canal Plus Thought To Be In Sports Rights Discussions

European broadcaster RTL Group and its French rival Canal Plus are understood to be planning an alliance that would see the two groups sharing European sports broadcasting rights. According to a report on the Media Guardian website this morning, the companies are discussing merging their broadcasting rights and marketing units in a venture that would create a major player in the European sports broadcasting marketplace.

RTL Group was created in April last year when Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL) and Bertelsmann (the two co-controlling shareholders of CLT-ufa), agreed to merge CLT-ufa with Pearson’s television interests. Bertelsmann owns 37% of RTL, GBL 30% and Pearson 22%.
