Newsquest Defies Difficult Environment To Produce Q1 Revenue Growth

Regional newspaper publisher Newsquest has reported strong revenue growth, despite the challenges of a possible UK advertising slowdown and the impact of the foot and mouth epidemic.

Parent company Gannett yesterday announced that advertising at Newsquest was benefiting from strong growth in classifieds. Recruitment has seen 25% growth and property classifieds reached double digit growth for the first quarter of the year. The impact of foot and mouth on rural titles is currently thought to be a greater threat than any possible UK ad revenue slowdown.

Gannett’s own Q1 results showed that its US titles were being badly hit by the dotcom advertising fallout and the grim outlook for US advertising. It warned that overall revenues for the second quarter were likely to see a year on year decline.
