The Independent Television Commission (ITC) has awarded Channel Three News Ltd nominated news provider status which allows the company to compete with ITN for the provision of ITV news. The company is a consortium consisting of Bloomberg L.P., BSkyB plc, CBS News, Chrysalis Group plc and Ulster Television, all holding 20% stakes.
This is the first time a company other than ITN has applied for this status and created a competition situation for ITV news provision. The ITC has judged the group to be “effectively equipped” and “adequately financed” to provide a high quality national and international news service to ITV, but it will remain the decision of the broadcaster as to which provider it goes with.
