Former director general of the Confederation of British Industry, Sir Digby Jones, could lead a bid to buy 47 of Trinity Mirror’s Midlands based newspapers.
Sir Digby is quoted in today’s Financial Times as saying at a meeting of the National Union of Journalists: “People have asked me to chair a bid if they can put one together, and I have said that I would love to.”
Chris Bullivant, owner of 15 midlands newspapers, is also understood to be willing to participate in a consortium bid, stating that he was already talking to financial backers.
Bullivant said that he wanted to avoid “recycled Reuters news” and that in order to achieve this it was necessary to invest in quality journalism.
