35bn Emails A Day By 2005, Says IDC

Globally, there will be 35 billion emails sent every day by 2005, according to research by International Data Corporation (IDC). By the end of 2000 the volume of mails is already expected to have reached 10 billion per day. Alongside this growth, IDC claims that web browsers will become more popular than standalone email applications for sending and receiving email.

“Like a heavy rain, escalating email usage can be a blessing or a curse depending on how prepared we and our environments are for them,” said Mark Levitt, research director for IDC’s Collaborative Computing program. “Effective planning for access, routing, storage, scanning, and related solutions for dealing with the email deluge requires a deep understanding of how email usage will evolve over time.”

Annually, Western Europe already sends 511 billion and this is predicted to rise to 1.6 trillion in 2005.
