Retailers Driving Online Ad Revival, Says Nielsen//NetRatings

Online advertising impressions increased by 77% year on year, as the market showed further signs of recovery, according to the latest data from Nielsen//NetRatings. Impressions totalled 94.2 billion in May, a leap from 53.2 billion impressions a year earlier.

Retail goods and services was the leading industry advertising on the web, issuing nearly 34 billion ad impressions during the month. That was over double the amount recorded by the financial services category which came in second with 14.4 billion impressions. Web media ads totalled 12.1 billion but the most dramatic increase was recorded by travel-related online advertising which saw impressions quadruple over the year to reach 5.4 billion.

“Retail companies continue to lead all industry segments in using the Web to get their marketing and branding messages across,” said Charles Buchwalter, vice president of media research at NetRatings.

There was further encouragement with the release of new statistics showing that the number of unique online ads in the US has risen by a third this year to a new high of 69,838.
