US Cable Firms Reap The Broadband Bounty

Prominent cable and DSL providers in the US added a combined 1.37 million broadband internet subscribers in the second quarter of this year, according to Leichtman Research Group.

By the mid-point of this year, the major US providers had over 13.5 million broadband subscribers between them. More than 65% of these users connect to the internet via cable modems and Time Warner and AT&T remain the market leaders.

In the past year, the leading cable companies added more than 3.5 million broadband internet subscribers while top DSL providers added 1.9 million.

“High speed internet growth was clearly a bright spot in an otherwise very challenging quarter for the cable industry,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group. “Cable continues to grow its high speed internet base, and strongly outpaces DSL providers in adding new subscribers.”
