UK Entertainment Spend To Hit £12bn By 2010, Says Informa

UK consumer expenditure on electronic media and entertainment passed the £10 billion mark in 2002 and is forecast to add a further £2 billion by 2010, according to new figures from Informa Media Group.

Television subscription and pay-per-view (PPV)/video on-demand (VoD) revenues, mainly from cable and satellite operators, provide the bulk of the revenues – 28% in 2002 and 39% in 2010. The sector will grow by 63% during this period, mainly due to consumers’ conversion to digital packages, says the report.

Digital television will also extend its market share due to a stagnant cinema sector and the music industry’s ongoing battle against piracy, especially peer-to-peer downloads and CD burning, says Informa.

In the home entertainment sector, DVD growth is expected to be rapid, but not substantial enough to offset the shortfall from VHS losses.

The group released equivalent figures for the US market which showed similar rates of growth, despite the cyclical nature of the games industry, the impact of piracy on the music sector and the decline of the VCR/VHS market (see US Entertainment Spend To Pass $120bn By 2010, Says Informa).
