Vodafone Buys Wireless Rights To Champions League

On the eve of the new Champions League season, Vodafone has acquired the wireless rights to the competition for the next three years in twelve countries.

Under the terms of the deal, the mobile giant will offer customers a range of content including near-live video clips from games, historic clips of UEFA Champions League matches, screen savers, ringtones, downloadable icons and match centre information.

Vodafone has secured exclusive wireless rights in Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Malta and Spain and rights in France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland and the UK.

Guy Laurence, CEO at Vodafone Global Content Services, said: “Vodafone is delighted to have obtained wireless rights for the UEFA Champions League in so many countries. It is a major achievement for Vodafone and for UEFA to be able to sign a single-deal over so many markets.”

Vodafone regards football as a potential money spinner and is believed to be competing with BSkyB and the 3G operator 3 for rights to show Premiership highlights on mobile phones from next year (see Three-Way Battle For Mobile Football Rights).
