Online Credit Card Payments Surge

As internet shopping continues to boom, so does the number of people using credit cards online, with one-in-ten UK web-users now choosing this payment method, which has grown by five times in popularity since 1999.

According to research by the Association for Payment Clearing Services (APACS), 10% of all credit card transactions now take place online, compared to just 2% five years ago.

The average number of purchases made by individual internet shoppers has also grown, doubling since 2000 and tripling during 2003, taking the average number of times people shop online to 11.2%.

The internet continues to change our shopping and bill payment habits with 20% of all credit card holders viewing their statement online and internet banking acting as the driving force behind the number of online shoppers.

Unsurprisingly, men are the biggest shoppers online with 35% making 11 or more purchases in the second half of 2003, compared to only 27% of females making internet purchases.

UK internet retailers can look forward to a huge sales boost as the Interactive Media Retail Group predicts that online shopping will generate £80 billion by 2009, with one in four purchases being made on the web (see UK Online Shopping To Reach £80bn By 2009)
