US Hispanic Online Users To Reach 21 Million By 2010

Hispanic internet users in the US look set to increase to nearly 21 million by 2010, up from just 15.7 million in 2005, according to new research from eMarketer.

By the end of 2006, eMarketer projects the number to be up by 25% on 2005’s figure, reaching 16.7 million.

In addition, the Hispanic population is young, particularly online, with eMarketer estimating that by 2010, the number of internet users under 35 will rise to 12.1 million in 2010, up from 9.1 million in 2005.

Commenting on the findings, Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the report, said: “The Hispanic youth explosion doesn’t show signs of slowing, at least in the in the near term.

“By 2010, when the median age of the US population is expected to be 36, the Hispanic median age will be just over 27, and in 2010, one-third of all Hispanic people in the US will be under 18.”

eMarketer asserts, that in many respects the US Hispanic youth market looks and feels like the greater youth market, with blogging, mobile phones, social networking and entertainment all popular activities.

Williamson continued: “Many Hispanic youth live in two worlds: one dominated by the culture and traditions of their family history, and the other awash in the iPods, MySpaces, mobile phones and hip-hop music of the general youth culture.”

According to a recent report from PQ Media, advertising expenditure on user-generated content is expected to rocket over the next four years, with podcasting adspend leading the way, forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 154.4% (see User-Generated Content Adspend To Rocket).

Recent figures from eMarketer confirm podcastings expected strong performance, forecasting the media to reach between 20 and 80 million US subscribers by 2010 (see Podcasting Could Reach 80 Million US Subscribers By 2010).
