The global market for video-on-demand services delivered via cable, internet protocol television (IPTV) networks and broadband is set to grow massively, according to new research from US researcher iSuppli.
iSuppli says that by 2010 there will be nearly 150 million active VOD users/subscribers worldwide.
Among the trends driving the growth of VOD will be the growing availability of VOD movie content, a growing market for mobile video and mobile TV and readily available consumer electronics equipment with broadband IP connections, enabling broadband/internet content to move to the TV via media home networks.
According to recent research from Leichtman Research Group, 60% of all US digital cable subscribers have used VOD, up from 25% two years ago (see US DVR And VOD Households Increase Significantly).
Meanwhile, a survey carried out by Accenture in association with the Economist Intelligence Unit said that VOD is expected to be the chief money maker among different IPTV applications (see Video-On-Demand Predicted To Be IPTV Revenue Generator).
