36 Million IPTV Homes By 2011

36 Million IPTV Homes By 2011

There will be 36 million IPTV homes by 2011, or around seven times as many as 2006, according to new research from Informa Telecoms & Media.

Despite this significant acceleration, Informa says that only 3.4% of the world’s TV households are forecast to subscribe to IPTV platforms by 2011, with operators battling for market share against digital cable and DTH, and also against DTT, although to a lesser extent.

Meanwhile, a recent report from Strategy Analytics said that 16 million homes will subscribe to IPTV by 2010 (see Record Demand For Digital TV In 2006).

Informa says that in 2005, global IPTV generated revenues from subscriptions and VOD of less than $1 billion. This figure is forecast to reach $12.2 billion by 2011, with $11.3 billion coming from subscription revenues, with an additional near-$1 billion from VOD revenues.

China is expected to be the leading IPTV market by subscribers, with 11.2 million by the end of 2011. However, Hong Kong will retain its leadership in the household penetration stakes and the US will contribute the largest IPTV revenues.

Adam Thomas, media research manager at Informa, says: “More immediately, we forecast 4.8 million IPTV households by the end of 2006, nearly double the 2005 figure of 2.5 million.

“Much of the growth in 2006, and for the next couple of years, is prompted by service launches by European telcos, especially the incumbents.”

Research and Markets recently unveiled a report which said that global IPTV subscriptions are expected to jump from two million to 34 million between 2005 and 2010 (see US IPTV Subscriptions To Increase By 78% By 2010).
