Sky+ To have 2.8 Million Subscribers By 2010

Sky+ To have 2.8 Million Subscribers By 2010

Sky’s high definition TV service will have 650,000 subscribers by 2010 (6.8% penetration), according to new forecasts from Merrill Lynch.

Sky+ meanwhile, is forecast by Merrill Lynch to have 2.8 million subscribers by 2010 (31% penetration), up from the 1.7 million recorded in Q1 2006, and higher than Sky’s own forecast of 25% penetration by 2010.

Multiroom added 46,000 subscribers in the first quarter of the year, reaching 1.1 million, although this was bellow Merrill Lynch’s forecast of 56,000 subscribers. The financial analyst predicts that multiroom will have 2.2 million subscribers by 2010 (23% penetration).

Merrill Lynch also forecasts that Sky Broadband will have 9.5 million subscribers in 2010, just below Sky’s target of 10 million, whilst 72.5% of subscribers are forecast to take the free broadband offer in 2007.

Merrill Lynch adds that the attractiveness of BSkyB’s offer of broadband and Sky+ could help bridge the gap between their own forecast figure of 9.5 million and the Sky target of 10 million subscribers by 2010.

BSkyB released financial results last week which showed that 74,000 customers have been connected to its broadband service since it was launched in July and that over 20% of all Sky households now have Sky+ (see Tabloid Format May Not Deliver Success).

A recent report from Datamonitor said that steady adoption of HDTV should be expected over the next two years (see UK Only Country In Europe With Over 50% DTV Services).
