High Level Of Interest In Mobile Internet

The latest consumer internet research from Point Topic shows that there is a high level of interest in mobile internet applications.

BroadBand Consumer Survey 3 (CS3) was carried out in December 2006 by Ipsos MORI and YouGov. They interviewed a representative national sample of 6,500 households in the UK.

Point Topic’s initial analysis of those who have internet access at home, currently about 60% of British households, shows some changes in their patterns of mobile phone use since our previous consumer survey (CS2) in Jan/Feb 06.

The research shows that fewer people make mobile voice calls. 80% said they had made one in the month leading up to the survey, down from 84%.

Texting is also down according to Point Topic, as are video phone calls and music downloads on mobiles. However sending or receiving photos is up and perhaps of most significance the number of people who access the internet using mobiles has tripled in the last 12 months from 4.8% to over 16%.

However, research released by the Mobile Data Association there were over 4 billion text messages sent in the UK during December 2006 (see Record 4 Billion Texts Sent In December).

When Point Topic asked what users would like to be able to do on the move the interest in general internet access was reinforced.

60% said that they would like to be able to email on the move, more than 45% want to be able to browse and search the internet, over 30% would like do their banking while mobile.
