Global IPTV Market Shows Growth

A new report from market research firm Dittberner shows that Western Europe led the global IPTV market in the third quarter of last year.

The 3Q07 Global Broadband Subscriber Survey found that the number of global subscribers to IPTV services increased by 12% to reach 7.6mn in the third quarter of last year.

According to the report, in 2007 Western Europe held 68% of the global market, however, Asia’s market share will increase and overtake that of Western Europe in 2008.

Dittberner added that France Telecom had over one million IPTV subscribers in the third quarter of last year, up 16%, and led the rankings of global IPTV service providers in terms of subscriber numbers.

Hong Kong was found to have the highest IPTV penetration rate, followed by France, with the US coming last in the top ten.

The report predicts that China and Korea will see their IPTV subscriber bases increase swiftly due to the high number of broadband subscribers and the high bandwidth each are capable of receiving.

A recent report from Informa Telecoms & Media found that Significant growth will result in 38.4 million IPTV homes by 2012 – or more than seven times as much as the figure at the end of 2006 (see IPTV To Be In 38.4m Homes Worldwide By 2012).

Despite this acceleration, IPTV – A Global Analysis found that only 3.1% of the world’s TV households will subscribe to an IPTV service by 2012.

Meanwhile, according to MRG’s biannual forecast said that Europe still leads the world IPTV market, while Asia and the “Rest-of-World” see emerging markets like China, Eastern Europe, Korea and Russia taking larger steps to growth (see Europe Still Leads World IPTV Market).

Growth for IPTV subs is projected to be from 13.5 million in 2007 to 72.6 million in 2011, roughly a 40% compounded annual growth rate. With an emphasis on profitability, improved operations and sustained growth, large European carriers are planning for future converged services still over 18 months away.
