Mobile TV Subscribers To Number 462m By 2012

The total number of mobile TV subscribers will reach 462 million over the next five years, according to a new report from ABI Research.

ABI Research said that this will be driven in large part by the expansion of 3G networks and flat rate plans for mobile video.

The build-out of mobile video delivery networks and an increase in the amount of available content will also contribute to the market’s growth, added ABI.

“Mobile operators’ sustained investment in video delivery will continue to be rewarded by subscribers’ growing adoption rates, particularly as they upgrade to new video-capable handsets,” says research director Mike Wolf.

“Consumers are being increasingly enticed by better experiences through more powerful and larger screens as well as by a widening array of subscription options.”

The number of subscribers to mobile video services in Asia-Pacific will grow from 24 million in 2007 to more than 260 million by 2012, with high levels of penetration occuring in both Japan and South Korea.

“South Korea and Japan will continue to lead worldwide, while some countries in Western Europe will also continue to see strong growth,” said Wolf.

“North America will also see some strong uptake as more services become available in 2008 with the launch of AT&T’s MediaFLO service, the continued expansion of Verizon Wireless’ MediaFLO subscriber base, and the growth of on-demand mobile video services.”

Last week, a report from Juniper Research forecast that music, games and mobile TV will be the major contributors to the global entertainment market, which will rise from just over $20 billion in 2006 to more than $64 billion by 2012 (see Music, Games And Mobile TV To Grow).

Strong growth is also expected from mobile TV, said Juniper, with many developed – and some emerging – markets launching dedicated mobile broadcast networks within the forecast period.

Screen Digest said that the number of markets offering the mobile broadcast TV is set to triple in the next two years, to 18 by the end of 2008 (see Mobile Broadcast TV Set To Grow).
