1.2bn Mobile Internet Devices By 2012

Mobile internet devices will grow to 1.2 billion by 2012 according to new research carried out by chip maker Intel.

Speaking as the company announced a new series of chips for mobile internet products, Gadi Singer, head of Intel’s mobility group, said: “The demand is there and the need is there and our technology can meet those needs.”

Recently released data from Point Topic revealed that there are currently under three million people in the UK who are using the mobile internet (see Under 3m People In UK Use Mobile Internet).

Point Topic asked 2000 people from across the UK if they had accessed the internet on a mobile device during May. It found that just 6% of the general adult population, equivalent to 2.9 million users, said they had.

Intel also estimated that there will be 100 million households watching IPTV by 2011.

Singer said: “The fact that people want to be on the internet all the time means they will be looking for the ability they have today say at their desk and to have that anytime and anywhere.

“That creates the demand for new devices and more sophisticated devices with the computing power and connectivity presenting a major opportunity.”

MRG forecasts that IPTV subscribers will grow from 24.4 million in 2008 to 92.8 million in 2012, with IPTV service revenue totaling $37.1 billion (see IPTV Subscribers Forecast To Reach 92.8m In 2012).
