New research has found that US newspaper websites attracted more than 70.3 million unique visitors in June 2009.

This equates to 35.9% of all US internet users, according to research by The Nielsen Company for the Newspaper Association of America (NAA).

The research found that newspaper website visitors generated 3.5 billion page views during the month and spent 2.7 billion minutes browsing the sites during more than 597 million sessions.

Last month, a study conducted by MORI Research for the NAA revealed that US consumers say they rely on newspaper advertisements more than ads in any other medium when they are planning, shopping and making purchase decisions.

Other media, including the internet, trailed newspapers by 20 percentage points as the primary medium for checking advertising, the study found.

Elsewhere, a survey from The Rosen Group found that the vast majority of US adult consumers still consider the print editions of newspapers and magazines indispensable sources sources of news and entertainment.

The survey polled Americans about the current state of media, and what might be in store for the future.
