More than 167 million US internet users watched online video during October, according to new figures from comScore’s Video Metrix service.

Online video viewing hit record levels, with nearly 28 billion videos viewed during the month, as Google Sites accounted for 38% of videos viewed online by Americans.

Google Sites remained the top US video property in October, delivering 10.5 billion videos viewed. YouTube.com accounted for nearly 99% of all videos viewed on Google sites. Hulu was second with 856 million videos viewed (3.1%) followed by Microsoft Sites with 451 million (1.6%) and Fox Interactive Media with 446 million (1.6%).

comScore found that the the top video ad networks in terms of their actual delivered reach were: BrightRoll Video Network with 16.5% penetration of online video viewers, Tremor Media Video Network with 15.5%, and BBE with 13.6%.

It also found that 84.4% of the total US internet audience viewed online video, with the average online video viewer watching 10.8 hours of video.

The duration of the average online video was 3.9 minutes, said comScore.

In September, TNS and The Conference Board published research showing that nearly one out of four US households watches TV online, up from 20% last year.

At around the same time, Nielsen released a report revealing that the average American watches a record 141 minutes of TV per month.
