Guardian News & Media has launched its paid-for app for the iPhone and iPod Touch today.
Readers will now be able to read content from the Guardian newspaper on the Apple devices for a one-off fee of £2.39.
The publisher has consistently rejected industry plans to introduce a paid-model for online news content but is charging for the app in a bid to generate revenues from other sources, according to reports.
The Guardian app, which was developed by mobile and marketing specialist zergo, features offline browsing and a topic-based news engine.
The app also offers image galleries and audio but does not include video footage, though this is expected to be added at a later date.
Earlier this year, the Telegraph Media Group launched a free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
