ABC Consumer July-Dec 2009: Women’s Monthly

Women's Magazines

The latest ABC consumer magazines release, for July to December 2009, shows that Condé Nast’s Glamour is once again top of the women’s monthly sector.

The handbag-sized magazine is a fair way in front of its fellow women’s monthlies with a total circulation of more than 515,000 copies, despite a 5.9% year on year drop.

ASOS.com, a free title from Seven Squared, took second place with almost 450,000 copies after a slight 0.6% year on year dip.

NatMag’s Cosmopolitan followed closely behind with more than 430,000 copies, despite also suffering a year on year decline of 4.5%.

However, some titles managed to avoid the downturn.  All three of IPC Media’s titles in our analysis saw year on year increases.

woman&home reported a 4.3% year on year rise, which takes its total up to over 368,000 copies, while InStyle was up by 1.7% to more than 184,000 copies.

The publisher’s Essentials magazine, meanwhile, saw a significant year on year increase of almost 14%, taking its total to more than 112,000 copies.

NatMag’s Prima and Harpers Bazaar also increased their circulation figures in the six months to the end of the year.  Prima was up by 1.5% year on year to over 288,000 copies, while Harpers Bazaar posted a 1.1% rise to just under 111,000 copies.

Elle, Red,Vanity Fair, Tatler and Top Sante Health & Beauty also enjoyed rises in the six-month period.

However, all the other titles in our analysis saw their circulations suffer as the recession continued to impact consumers.

Marie Claire‘s circulation stands at 283,000 copies following a fairly substantial 9.9% year on year decline.  NatMag’s She also recorded a fairly high 9.1% drop to 150,000 copies.

Meanwhile, Condé Nast’s Easy Living and Vogue saw their circulations fall by 8.1% and 4.5% respectively.  Easy Living now has a circulation of 170,000 copies, while Vogue‘s stands at around 210,500.

Bauer’s Yours, Newhall’s Candis and Hachette Filipacchi’s Psychologies also reported year on year drops, of 7.3%, 7.8% and 6.8% respectively.

However, River Publishing’s Healthy magazine witnessed the largest overall percentage fall in our analysis, down by 22.3% year on year to below 143,000 copies.
