ABC January-June 2010 consumer magazines round-up

Magazines

ABC figures for January to June 2010 represent a fairly mixed overview of the consumer magazine market.

A number of Women’s Monthly titles put in a good performance in the first six months of the year, with Harpers Bazaar, Essentials, Woman & Home, Prima and Red all posting decent year on year increases.

However, as with many of the other categories, some titles saw relatively poor results – NatMag’s Cosmopolitan, Hachette Filipacchi’s Psychologies and Newhall’s Candis all recorded significant drops.

The top of the Women’s Monthly sector remains unchanged – Condé Nast’s Glamour is still way ahead of its rival titles with a total circulation of more than 526,000 copies.

The Women’s Weekly sector was much the same, although all credit to Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell titles New! and Star, which both enjoyed an impressive year on year boost to their circulations.  However, Desmond can’t be too smug as the publishing group’s OK! magazine suffered a hefty decline this period.  H Bauer’s Take a Break still dominates the category with a more than 855,000 copies.

Looking at the Men’s Lifestyle sector, too few titles saw decent rises.  Nat Mag’s Esquire was one of the only exceptions after posting a 10.3% year on year increase to 58,000 copies.   Meanwhile, several titles recorded substantial drops in their circulation, including Zoo, Loaded, FHM and Nuts.

Freebies Shortlist and Sport continue to lead the sector, while Nat Mag’s paid-for title Men’s Health remains in third place after a 1.8% year on year dip.

In the TV Listings category, H Bauer’s TV Choice continues to lead with an impressive circulation of more than 1.3 million, although IPC Media’s What’s on TV isn’t far behind with 1.2 million.  However, as with the July to December 2009 release, most titles in the sector lost readers.  Only two TV magazines saw a year on year increase – TV & Satellite Week and Total TV Guide.

Good Housekeeping remains the most popular title in the Home Interests sector, with a total of more than 422,000 copies.  The Homes Interest category, perhaps unsurprisingly, seemed to be the least affected by the recession with only GoodHomes recording a year on year decline.

It was a different story for Music, Teen and Children’s magazines though.  All titles in the Teen market suffered heavily and few titles in the Children’s group manage to build of their circulations this release.  Music was slightly more varied, although Q and Mojo posted significant drops.

Full market sector analysis and data will be available on Newsline this afternoon.
