According to a new report from ExactTarget, 40% of respondents clicked the ‘like’ button for, or ‘liked’, a company, brand or association on Facebook to receive discounts and promotions.

Coming in a close second, 39% said it was to show their support for the company to their Facebook friends.

36% said it was to get a ‘freebie’, such as a free sample or a coupon.34% said it was to stay informed about the company’s activities.

Updates were also an important reason for ‘liking’ something: 33% said they ‘liked’ something to get updates on future products, and 30% said it was to get updates on upcoming sales.

Entertainment also factored in, with 29% ‘liking’ a company for “fun or entertainment”, and 25% to get access to exclusive content.

22% said they would ‘like’ something because someone recommended it to them.

21% of respondents said they would ‘like’ somethign to learn more about the company, and 13% said they would ‘like’ it for education about company topics.

Interaction scored low as a motivation for ‘liking’ a company, brand or association on Facebook, with only 13% of respondents choosing it as a reason.
