News International has appointed Katie Vanneck-Smith to the newly expanded role of CMO.

Reporting to Rebekah Brooks, Vanneck-Smith will now be responsible for the marketing teams across News International as well as developing customer sales and marketing strategies across all of NI.

Vanneck-Smith, who returns from maternity leave this month, will also be responsible for circulation revenue and the continued growth in subscription sales of print and digital products.

“Katie has huge marketing experience in our industry, having worked in a number of roles both at News International and with Telegraph Media Group,” Brooks said.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned publishing group has also announced the appointment of David Rey as chief business officer.  Rey will join NI in January.

He will also co-ordinate all new print and digital product development, ensuring that new applications and web initiatives are implemented quickly and efficiently.

Moving over from Discovery Television Networks, where Rey is currently chief operating officer, he will also be responsible for business development and creating commercial relationships with third parties to grow revenues from digital content.

Rey worked for Sky for 12 years prior to joining Discovery.
