Twitter’s chief executive Dick Costolo said takeover talks for the micro-blogging site are “just a rumour”.

Speaking at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Costolo also confirmed that Twitter will introduce a new money-making method this year. Twitter already runs promoted tweets, accounts and trends.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Twitter was in takeover talks with “at least some potential suitors” including Facebook and Google, which valued the site between $8 billion to $10 billion. However, Costolo said: “People write that stuff all the time… I don’t know where these things come from, it’s just a rumour.”

Twitter carrys around 130 million tweets a day, up from 100 million at the end of 2010, according to Costolo. “At the end of this year’s Superbowl we saw 4,000 tweets per second,” he said.
