Amazon launches ad-supported Kindle

Amazon plans to sell Kindles with on-screen advertising for a $25 discount.

The $114 Kindle will display ads on the bottom of the home screen and on its screensaver but not within books.

“We’re working hard to make sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one,” Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

Olay, Visa and the Amazon.com Reward Visa Card will be the first to advertise on the Kindle.

The response to the ad-supported version has been positive so far, though TechCrunch wonders why Amazon didn’t go for a “killer $99” price tag.
