BBC One’s long-running New Tricks easily won the peak-hour ratings last night with a high of more than 8.2 million viewers.

The crime drama attracted over 8.1 million average viewers during the 9pm to 10pm slot, ahead of ITV1’s Show Me the Funny (a X Factor-style show for comedians), which settled on a low 1.6 million average viewers.

BBC Two’s Horizon documentary banked 1.3 million average viewers and a 5.6% share during the same slot, equal to Channel 4’s Jamie Cooks Summer series.

Meanwhile, Channel 5’s one-off documentary The Truth about Cheryl Cole – an hour long programme examing her rise and fall(s) – secured 1.2 million average viewers and a 5% audience share during the prime-time slot.

The second-highest ratings of the evening were achieved by the soaps – with ITV1’s Coronation Street reaching a high of almost 7.8 million peak viewers, while Eastenders banked 7.6 million peak viewers in the pre-watershed slot.
