Although TV sales in the first three months of the year dipped below two million for the first time since 2007, volume sales in April 2012 were up an impressive 15% on April 2011, according to latest figures from GfK, with internet connected smart TVs accounting for 40% of the market value in March 2012.
After a lacklustre performance since Autumn 2010, and despite the fact that more than 50 million flat TVs have been sold in the last ten years, the TV market has yet again come into its own.
With the Digital Switchover almost complete, it is not surprising that 22″ and 24″ TV sales are up 6% to 2 million units as consumers replace second and third small screen analogue TVs.
Given the impending Jubilee, Olympics and European football championships, TV purchases are becoming a priority for many. 40″+ TV sales are still increasing, up 6% to 100,000 units when comparing March 2012 year-on-year.
Newer technology will contribute to the appeal, especially with the Olympics’ 100 metre final and opening and closing ceremony being broadcast in 3D. More than a million 3D TVs have been sold to date.
Nick Simon, GfK Account Director, commented: “As we continue through 2012, the extra footfall in electronics retailers caused by the Olympics and the football will help to provide a much needed boost to consumer electronics as a whole.”
